DeAr Movie Review
‘DeAr’ revolves around the issue of chronic snoring causing marital discord, a premise that naturally invites comparisons to last year’s ‘Good Night’. However, the twist here is that the wife is the one who snores. Despite the potential to explore numerous related issues, the film squanders this opportunity. It ends up lacking focus, juggling too many emotions without delving deeply into the main theme. Although the film avoids making derogatory ‘wife jokes’ for the most part, it stumbles towards the end with a song titled ‘Thalavali’.
In another scene, Arjun suggests that if women can seek divorce over a man’s baldness, he should be able to do the same for his wife’s snoring. He labels them as ‘fake feminists’, thereby diluting the meaning of feminism. Unfortunately, most of the humor falls flat.
The film attempts to convey the importance of compromise in a relationship. However, we barely see the couple making genuine efforts to reach a compromise, except for a failed attempt at creating a sleeping schedule. Arjun hastily moves to file for divorce before any meaningful compromise is achieved. Despite the film establishing that snoring isn’t a ‘problem’, Deepika finds herself repeatedly apologizing to Arjun.
Moreover, the film offers little insight into Deepika’s life, apart from a few hints about her job. In contrast, Arjun’s profession as a journalist is thoroughly detailed. One standout performance comes from Ilavarasu, who shines as Deepika’s loving father.
‘DeAr’ could have been more impactful had it focused more on the relationship between Deepika and Arjun. Instead, it takes detours to explore other characters’ stories. We get an arc about Saravanan (played by Kaali Venkat), who is a patriarchal figure treating his wife poorly, and another about Lakshmi (played by Rohini), a single mother longing to reunite with her husband. These subplots detract from the central issue of snoring, leaving it sidelined.
